What are NEUTRAL COLOURS (WHITES, GREYS, BLACKS) and should we use them? Our Murphy Homes in-house Colour Consultant says ‘Yes – you are not boring and neutral colours are very important to the overall colour scheme of your home’.
Exploring and understanding neutral colours can be complex. When someone talks about a neutral colour, they are often referring to a shade that lacks colour, however, this comment does not due ‘neutrals’ justice. In essence a true description of a neutral colour is one that doesn’t compete with other colours.
Neutral colours are white, beige, brown, grey, and even shades of black, but variations of these colours are neutral as well.
Neutral colours do the background job so well that people sometimes don’t pay attention to the benefits of using them. Neutral colours are restful and will not interfere with decorations and accent colours. They are non-combative and for this reason they are very important for designers, decorators, painters and anyone else working with colour placement.
The right neutral colour creates more depth and makes an area look bigger or deeper. If your goal is to create layers and texture, a neutral colour can assist in achieving this.
Above is our award-winning Murphy Homes Azure project. Here you can see the beautiful textured stone splashback, mixed with whites, blacks and timber features are perfect examples of the use of textured neutrals.
Neutral colours are always favourites with Murphy Homes designers, as they can easily add accent colours with art and furnishings to create the sort after ‘wow’ factor that their clients are looking for.
Use your neutrals wisely and then have fun with accent colour!
